The Wash House SCIO
(Our community centre in the heart of Portobello)

The Wash House is committed to providing a friendly and welcoming meeting space and base for activities for local people, as well as a vibrant venue for both local and nationwide cultural events. Owned by the City of Edinburgh Council, the centre is run by a voluntary management committee who are responsible for managing the centre and ensuring financial and community accountability.

  • To build social capital by supporting inclusive social, cultural and educational activities for all ages and a space for people to get involved in local community life. 

  • To provide a welcoming community venue that helps foster strong community cohesion, collaboration, health and well-being.

Our Aims

  • To promote and maintain a vibrant and welcoming centre, populated with a wide variety of activity and events that reflect the diversity of the local community and beyond.

  • To provide quality facilities that are accessible, well-designed, practical, and attractive.

  • To collaborate with local initiatives and networks for the benefit of the local community

  • To promote and provide a professionally equipped venue for both amateur and professional cultural events.

  • To provide a link to support services that help meet social needs.

  • Maintain a financially sustainable organisation that will remain active in the community for many years to come.

  • To continue to ensure that those living locally are aware of the centre and can access the information, opportunities and activities offered.

  • To uphold the City of Edinburgh Council’s Net Zero commitment by 2030, by working to reduce carbon emissions, to improve energy efficiency and to support a greener, cleaner, fairer city.
